These top 5 furniture restoration services in Dublin revived our beloved antiques

Years of Experience: I went for restoration services that showed me their years of experience in restoring furniture.

Specialisation and Techniques: I chose services that specialise in certain furniture and techniques. This allowed me to better trust them in doing a better job at restoring a certain piece.

Cost for Restoration: I deliberately chose services that could perform the restoration at a reasonable cost

Time: I picked services that provide a clear timeline for the restoration. They should take no more than a few weeks or a few months.

Insurance and Warranty: While rare, I valued services that provide warranty and insurance for their restorations. This gave me great peace of mind when choosing to work with them.

Some services don’t really make furniture like they used to. A few items I bought when I first moved out of my parents’ house were sent straight to the dump after a few years. On the other hand, the table my mum gave me is still standing to this day.

Over time, things grew dull, so I turned to furniture restoration—a perfect way to preserve beloved family heirlooms for years to come.

That’s when I got the idea to compile a list of the best furniture restoration services in Dublin, combining the ones I found with services that my friends and family have used.

How much does furniture restoration cost in Dublin?

Furniture restoration in Dublin typically costs around €500 or €2,000. This price can increase or decrease depending on the type of furniture, the extent of the restoration, the techniques, and the methods used to restore it.

The Chair Doctor has over 30 years of experience and is a dedicated chair upholstery service that claims to fix and restore all sorts of chairs.

I was quite impressed by their range of services, as it seems that they can truly bring life to any type of chair. A few of the types that stood out to me were office chairs, school chairs, gym equipment, and even dental chairs.

While they can’t entirely remake these chairs, I like that they can provide and install new cushions that’ll revitalise them.

They achieve this by using a wide range of fabrics tailored to the chair’s purpose and reinforcing them with contract-grade PVC vinyl for extra durability.

What stood out to me is that whenever possible, they try to replace certain parts or repair chairs that only have small defects.

However, they only refurbish cushioned chairs and can’t really do much for purely wooden chairs. Aside from this, they only see clients through appointments, so don’t head to their offices without one.

Pros

  • Over 30 years of experience
  • Offers upholstery for all types of chairs
  • Extensive range of fabrics
  • Uses contract-grade PVC vinyl
  • Repairs chairs with small defects

Cons

  • Appointment-based service
  • Only works with cushioned chairs

On budget and in pristine condition

“I have been using Kevin & his excellent team at The Chair Doctor, for nearly 13 years now. Their ability to deliver on time, on budget and in pristine condition, is why I only continue to use them for all our large and small volume commercial work.”

– David L, Google Review

They really went above and beyond

“I can’t not say enough great things about the team at Chair Doctor, we have used them twice now and their work is second to none. The quality of the fabrics, the stitch work etc is just amazing. We had outdoor cushions reupholstered and they actually look better than when we bought the set. Amanda was just amazing and beyond helpful. I would highly recommend them, they really went above and beyond to get the work done. Thank you so much. I look forward to working with you again in the future.”

If you’re looking for a service that specialises in French Polishing, P Adams and Daughter might be the service for you. Patrick and Audrey, a father-daughter duo with over 50 years of experience, shared how they use modern techniques to restore and revive cherished furniture pieces.

I found their service to be quite extensive. They offer an array of colours and finishes that try to replicate the furniture’s old ones. I was even impressed that they offer brass and silver restorations.

Aside from this, they also provide guides and tutorials to their customers on how to take better care of their newly French-polished furniture.

It’s great that they work on most types of wooden furniture. Something else that they offer is wooden stairway restoration, which enhances the natural beauty of the wood and makes it more durable.

I also quite liked that they offer free quotations and consultations.

Something to keep in mind, however, is that there are certain types of wood that they can’t work with, specifically ones with high natural oil content.

Pros

  • Over 50 years of experience
  • Specialises in restoring wooden furniture
  • Utilises modern French polishing techniques
  • Provides guides to maintain newly restored items
  • Offers brass and silver restoration
  • Offers free quotations and consultations

Cons

  • May not be suitable for certain types of wood

Terry Griffin and his family have been working on wood restorations for over 100 years, and they have the pieces to show for it.

His family has worked on large-scale projects, including the Casino at Marino, Dublin Castle, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Aside from these, more recent projects of theirs include the Mansion House and City Hall.

What makes them stand out is that every piece that goes through their workshop needs to be approved by Terry before it’s sent back to the owner.

I was impressed to learn that their workshop specialises in all sorts of restoration techniques, such as upholstery, leatherwork, and French polishing. They also offer wood carving and cabinet making as additional services.

Another aspect of their business that I like is that they sell antique furniture. So if you’re looking for antique pieces to add to your collection, they might have some for you.

However, they are an expensive business compared to others.

Pros

  • Over 100 years in the industry
  • Top-notch projects
  • Offers French polishing services
  • Creates wooden carvings and cabinets
  • Sells restored antique furniture

Cons

  • Expensive services

Absolutely brilliant job

“Terry fixed an old broken flower stand for us. We could not be more happier with it now. He did an absolutely brilliant job with it. And a lovely guy as well.”

– Kaustuv Roy, Google Review

It couldn’t have been an easier process

“Got Terry to design and build an additional piece for my TV Unit. Couldn’t have been an easier process, he measured up, proposed a design that fitted in to what was already there and made perfect sense in the room. Really easy to work with and good fun through the process.”

With over 45 years of experience, brothers Mark and Philip have extensive hands-on experience in restoring leather furniture.

I like that before any restoration can happen, they provide 3 initial services to make sure that the leather is in its best shape.

That’s right, they provide leather cleaning, which removes any dirt and grime on the material. They then offer leather stain removal, removing any nasty stains on your leather item. Finally, they add a unique treatment that should prevent further damage.

For the restoration aspect, they offer colour restoration. It’s impressive that the team conducts a significant amount of initial testing.

As for the process itself, they offer to restore your pieces to their original colour or to a different colour of your choice.

However, they do require an initial deposit or ⅓ of the cost to be paid before any work can be done.

Pros

  • Over 45 years of experience
  • Full-on leather restoration
  • Leather expert team
  • Provides colour restoration

Cons

  • Requires initial payment

Really happy with the job

“You can trust your treasured pieces to this really skilled craftsman. Paul restored the leather seat and arm pads of our 16 yr old Herman Miller Eames lounger – patching, colour matching and restoring tears, cracks and worn out sections of the leather to an excellent finish – he has an empathy and real talent for this craft – really happy with the job and Paul’s excellent professional service. Could 100% recommend.”

– Caroline Vaughan, Google Review

It looks like new again

“Thank you, Paul for the restoration work on my 25yr old leather suite. It looks like new again and I’m so happy that I chose restoration over replacement.

Paul is a fine craftsman who knows his leather and takes pride in his work. He replied promptly to my enquires and offered the right advice about re-stuffing with new foam. I chose Paul on the basis of his reviews, so I’m very happy to share my good experience and highly recommend him.”

With nearly 50 years of experience, The Restoration Centre is a great option for those looking for an all-rounder restoration service.

Some of the services that stood out to me were the typical French polishing and upholstery. They also provide services such as joint and frame repair, repair and replica parts, antique key replacement, and even alternative finishes.

I found it great that they work with all types of furniture. It includes period and antique furniture, and modern and contemporary furniture.

Their batch work service is top-notch too. If you have a lot of antiques that need repair or refurbishment, I can attest that they are a great business for that.

What I found most helpful was their list of hints and tips—also available on their website—which gave me practical insights on extending the results of their service.

However, because they do a lot of specialised work, their services are likely to be much more expensive than most basic restorers.

Pros

  • Over 50 years of experience
  • Wide range of antique repairs
  • Works with all types of furniture
  • Provides replacement pieces

Cons

  • Potentially high cost

“Kevin completed this restoration of my late grandfathers teak sideboard. The finished restoration was amazing and it was a great relief to have such an important item treated with such great respect!”
