The 5 best psychologists in Dublin who truly listen

  • Licensing and Credentials: I went for psychologists with proper licensing and credentials. This can assure me that they’re trained and can provide proper treatment to their patients.
  • Reviews and Reputation: I prioritised psychologists with great reviews. When combining my experience with that of others, I can gain a fuller understanding of each psychologist’s work ethic and care for their patients.
  • Location and Availability: I selected psychologists who can adjust to their patients’ schedules.
  • Specialisations: I chose psychologists who can handle cases such as children or adults with autism or ADHD, to showcase their range and care for patients.

My younger sister struggled in school and eventually developed depression. Her psychiatrist prescribed medication and recommended talk therapy to go with it.

Clueless about where to start, my mother and I spent months visiting different psychologists in Dublin until we found one my sister felt comfortable with. Within an hour of her first session, she already felt a sense of relief.

That was years ago. Since then, my sister has visited several clinics, and with her insights—and a little help from friends—I’ve compiled a list of the best psychologists in the city who truly listen and offer compassionate support for every generation.

How much does it cost to see a psychologist in Dublin?

In Dublin, the cost to see a psychologist ranges from €80 to €170 per hour. This can easily increase or decrease depending on factors such as insurance and the specialisations of each psychologist.

MyMind provides therapy for individuals or couples, and can even work with children and adolescents.

What I love the most about their treatment is their ability to combine the benefits of face-to-face and online therapy. Their therapists offer both options at a relatively similar cost.

Another great aspect is their extensive network of qualified and multidisciplinary therapists, who can provide exceptional care to individuals of all ages.

I appreciate that they have therapists of over 20 languages and that therapy doesn’t require a GP’s referral.

Appointments are also given within 72 hours of booking. Despite this, some patients have had to wait longer to get an appointment.

Still, I like that individual sessions last 50 minutes and are available from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM on weekdays, and until 2:00 PM on weekends.

I also personally appreciate their discounted prices, which can be as low as €30 for low-income patients. There’s also a package for individual sessions that lasts for 6 sessions for 6 months.

Pros

  • Works with individuals, couples, and children
  • Offers face-to-face or online sessions
  • Multidisciplinary therapists
  • Over 20 languages available
  • Doesn’t require GP’s referral
  • Sessions last 50 minutes
  • Offers discounts to low-income patients

Cons

  • Can have long wait times for bookings

I personally love heading to the Other clinic. The main standout of the office is the ambience, which provides a calm and quiet place for patients.

As a patient, I felt safe throughout the entire experience. Booking is easy enough since it can be done online.

Yet, I find their services to be expensive compared to others. However, I still can’t help but enjoy each session. Their therapists specialise in different mental health disorders, and provide help for all of them.

When discussing their services, several stand out. My favourites are their counselling sessions and the psychotherapy sessions, which are perfect for one-on-one conversations with their qualified staff.

Additionally, patients can access their adolescent therapy for younger teens. Psychological assessment reports are also available here, which is great for litigation cases.

Couples therapy is also provided here. Patients can avail themselves of the clinic’s psychoanalysis services to better understand themselves and their inner workings.

Pros

  • Great office ambience
  • Easy booking process
  • Works with different types of disorders
  • Extensive services

Cons

  • Expensive compared to others

Thank you for providing a space and the support I need

“I can’t sufficiently express how grateful and appreciative I am, without writing thousands upon thousands of words, for the help and support my therapist here gives me in doing the hard, frightening and sad work that needs doing in order for therapy to be truly beneficial. Almost 18 months of weekly appointments and I can peacefully say that I’ll keep going for as long as I can. Thank you so much for providing a space and the support I need to consistently learn, grow and love myself.”

Best decision I’ve made

“I was recommended this clinic and was sceptical at first, much like about putting a review online, but after the level of care I received I wanted to share. I had a lot of questions like was it for me, would I be able, could I afford it etc. but after contacting them many of these were answered and I felt more at ease. I had been struggling with things for a while and when I started I didn’t quite understand the connection between what the therapist said and what I was saying but it really taught me to think twice about things and why I might feel a certain way, it’s really opened my eyes. Coming here and more importantly sticking it out is one of the best decisions I’ve made and I’m sincerely thankful for all their help. Thanks again!!”

What parents love about Dr. Saoirse Mac Cárthaigh is that he focuses his attention on children, specifically children with autism.

His multi-disciplinary practice offers an autism diagnostic assessment that comprises other tests. These include learning/developmental assessments.

He can also provide children with an educational psychology assessment to test a child’s academic and cognitive skills. I’ve seen this test first-hand with my niece, and the assessment is very thorough.

Another valuable assessment is the cognitive assessment, which evaluates speech and spatial recognition. Lastly, there’s the career interest assessment, perfect for those in the senior cycle before university.

Although I found Dr. Cárthaigh’s services to be far more expensive than others, this is all well and good due to his specialisation in children.

Pros

  • Specialises in children with autism
  • Provides a comprehensive autism diagnosis
  • Offers a wide range of assessments
  • Provides a career interest assessment for young teens
  • Offers normal consultations

Cons

  • Expensive services

We really appreciated the time and guidance we received

“I would highly recommend Dr. Saoirse Mac Cárthaigh and SMC Psychology. As a family, we really appreciated the time and guidance we received prior to the assessment. The assessment itself was completed at a pace that suited our child, who was made to feel completely at ease throughout. Dr. Mac Cárthaigh engaged with him effortlessly, making the process smooth and comfortable.

We received the detailed feedback report very quickly. The recommendations have been extremely helpful to our child’s school in understanding how best to challenge and support them in their learning. For our child, gaining insight into how they think and learn has been truly life-changing.”

– Emer Humphreys, Google Review

He made us and our son feel at ease

“Could not recommend Saoirse enough, from start to finish he made us and our son feel at ease. The process was very professional. Along with the results we got plenty of information to help us have a better understanding of our son. Implementing changes recommend our family life has already improved and for that we will be forever grateful.”

For those who require coaching at specific life stages, Larry G. Maguire is the ideal choice. He offers help to those struggling with work. I’ve learned some valuable insights through his guidance for graduates and self-employed workers.

What makes Larry’s treatment shine is the one-to-one coaching, where he gets to know each patient, and I felt heard throughout the entire process.

Aside from this, he also offers top-notch psychometric testing, which is particularly beneficial for recent graduates.

To develop social skills, the professionals here often host mental skills workshops that promote leadership and motivation. This helps patients work in groups.

For a more personal approach, Larry offers mental skill courses that encourage self-improvement through learning about others. These are available online and can be accessed anywhere.

However, Larry’s practice doesn’t offer traditional psychotherapy sessions or assessments. Instead, it focuses solely on work-related aspects of psychology.

Pros

  • Work-focused therapy
  • Offers one-on-one coaching
  • Provides psychometric testing
  • Promotes mental skills workshops
  • Offers individual self-improvement courses

Cons

  • Doesn’t offer typical psychotherapy sessions

Left with an action plan to start improving

“Larry is very intuitive and great at noticing key moments in our conversations. Had a great session with him and left with an action plan to start improving and working on my shortcomings. Thank you greatly!”

– Kristján Aron Hjartarson, Google Review

His compassion for and interest in people are quite remarkable

“The breadth of Larry’s knowledge, along with his compassion for and interest in people is quite remarkable. He brings a high level of professionalism and intellectual robustness to everything he puts his attention to. He has worked with us on a number of development programmes in DCU, which were very well received. I highly recommend him.”

Bergin Psychological Services is great for adults and children. What makes them stand out is their focus on conditions like autism and providing drug-free treatment for those suffering from ADHD.

These are available for both children and adults. This is particularly noteworthy, as most clinics typically only provide treatment for children. I found this particularly heartwarming because I have adult friends who are also seeking this diagnosis.

Their ADHD diagnosis involves a GP, psychiatrist, and in-house therapist working together. They also offer an eight-session, non-medicated talk therapy program. It’s praised by many, though it may not suit those who rely on medication for symptom control.

Besides these, other treatments are available, such as psychotherapy. This service is available at this clinic for individuals aged 16 years and older. These can be one-on-one sessions or couples therapy sessions.

Based on my experience, therapy here involves a constant collaboration between the patient and therapist, and I truly felt that the therapist cared about me.

Pros

  • Focuses on autism and ADHD
  • Provides services for adults and children
  • Provides a diagnosis for autism and ADHD
  • Multi-disciplinary practice
  • Offers psychotherapy
  • Offers couples therapy

Cons

  • May not be ideal for patients needing ADHD medication

Extremely supportive

“I have found both the psychologist I worked with and Mr Zak Powers to be extremely supportive, welcoming and professional throughout my experience with Bergin Psychological Services. I would highly recommend their service to anybody and I would I would absolutely seek their service again myself if needed in the future.”

– Brian Campbell, Google Review

If you don’t know where to start as an adult with ADHD, I’d recommend him

“Zac Powers is a helpful, patient and knowledgeable psychologist. He analysed my case carefully and gave me detailed feedback. If you don’t know where to start as an adult with ADHD, I’d recommend him.”
