Top 5 Carpenters in Dublin with a Knack for Style

  • Licensing and Certification: I made sure that when reviewing these carpenters, they had proper licensing and certifications before doing any work for our houses.
  • Affordability: I  chose carpenters who aren’t just providing a quality service, but are also doing these services at a reasonable price. I wouldn’t want to spend a fortune when I can get it for much cheaper.
  • Quality of Goods: I ensured that the work completed by these carpenters is sure to last. I wouldn’t want you wasting your money on furniture that’s superficial at best and breaks after a few months at worst.
  • Years in the Trade: I wanted someone who’s well-known to the community and has enough experience under their belt. While hiring someone fairly new might be good for their business, I don’t want to risk my home just to help a stranger.
  • Range of Ability: Nobody wants someone who can only make shelves. I’m looking for someone who can create and repair almost anything.

We all love custom furniture. It is far superior to ready-made ones and can be customised to fit in anywhere and serve any aesthetic. But we also want something stable that lasts a lifetime, which is why we look for competent carpenters to do the job.

Homeowners like us don’t just want furniture that’s stylish; we also want to make sure that what these carpenters can offer us aligns with what we want and makes great use of the space provided to them, without having to spend a fortune.

But don’t you worry—my friends and I have compiled a list of some of the best carpenters in Dublin. If you’re looking for custom furniture or just someone who can fix a broken cabinet, then here they are.

How much does a carpenter charge in Dublin?

A carpenter in Dublin typically charges around €40 to €50 per hour or €250 to €300 per day.

For custom furniture, prices range from €1,500 to €8,000, depending on the specific project. This doesn’t factor in stuff such as material costs.

SBB Carpentry has been serving the Beaumont area and its surroundings for 5 years, and is a favourite among locals. When I had an apartment near Rockfield Park, they were a lifesaver when I needed to install a few cabinets in my kitchen.

They have quite a few different types of furniture under their belt, such as Sliderobes, Wooden Floors, Wardrobes, and Kitchen Furniture. They also make cabinets and various types of woodwork for your home.

They have a few notable employees, ones that stood out from my experience were Brian and his team. Brian did a lot of the back-and-forth with me about the colours, size, and finish of the cabinets while his team worked efficiently to get the job done.

They were a joy to be around, and they worked pretty fast. My cabinets were made and installed within a 2-day time period, and they’re probably still in that apartment to this day.

Just a heads up, they might be a bit more expensive compared to other carpenters in the area. However, the quality of their work and how fast they can do it is worth more than a few additional euros.

Pros

  • 5 years of experience
  • Customizable furniture
  • Friendly team
  • Fast turnaround time

Cons

  • Tends to be a bit expensive

Turned out fabulous

“Brian we are delighted with our new wardrobes! Our timescale changed and Brian was very accommodating and organised his work schedule for us! He gave us great advice and offered ideas we hadn’t thought of and they have turned out fabulously! I can’t recommend him enough. Will definitely give him a shout for some future work we need done!”

It’s really functional

“Just had my utility room installed by SBB Carpentry. Absolutely delighted with it! It was a pleasure to deal with this company, they worked from early morning to get the job done and cleaned up after the job. We had a number of consultations before the work started and nothing was a problem. The space was awkward and most of the units had to be custom made to fit. It’s really functional, modern and looks brilliant. Highly recommend SBB, from start to finish they were thoroughly professional and responsive.”

JBK is for those who want a more modern aesthetic for their woodwork. They’re also known for revitalising new life to old furniture, which is nice for those antiques at grandma’s house.

Something that amazed me about them is that every piece is custom-made and made from some of the finest materials in Dublin. They have great attention to detail, and my mum was a satisfied customer.

My mum commissioned a nice new kitchen for their new home down at Crumlin. She wanted something modern, with a nice Instagrammable look, while still being uniquely her own. They delivered and were spectacular at what they did.

They didn’t just make some nice cabinets and drawers; they also chose some lovely granite for the kitchen island and made it quite accessible for my mum, who has some difficulty with high shelves.

But we advise that you don’t pay in full until you’re absolutely satisfied with their work, as a few tweaks after the job is done may require a delay of a few days or weeks before they can get back to you.

Pros

  • Modern design aesthetics
  • Unique woodworks and furniture
  • Quick to reply to messages
  • Accessible furniture design

Cons

  • Long waitlist for after payment adjustments

Great advice with colours

“I am very happy with my new feature wall. The professionalism of the lads from JBK was fantastic. They know their stuff. They gave great advice with colours and finishes as I wasn’t sure exactly what i wanted. They were done on three days and were clean and expects to my home. I can’t wait to get it painted now.”

– Amanda G Flanagan, Google Review

Everything was so precise

“We were absolutely delighted with our feature wall from the lads at JBK, from day 1 they were so helpful, giving advise on things we weren’t sure about, always on the other end of the phone for questions! Once we decided what we wanted, it was all smooth sailing from there. Everything was so precise and there was no hanging around, from taking out the old fire, the lads building the wall, to the plasterer, the electrician and the painting, it was all done so seamlessly and we are so happy with the end result. We couldn’t recommend these guys highly enough, top class job from top class guys.”

“Some of the best shelves I had made” was what my friend, Kirsty, told me about Ed Kenny Carpentry. I couldn’t help but agree as she has quite a lot of books at her place, and they fit snugly and well on her new shelves.

Ed Kenny specialises in shelves and alcove units, and they have some awesome furnishings that will elevate any space you let them have their hands on.

They also offer free estimates, so you can easily see if they’re for you.

They can make any type of shelf you can think of, as Kirsty was given quite a different range of styles, starting from modern to an antique, yet timeless look. She eventually chose the modern aesthetic as it fitted her home’s vibe.

They also created some nice alcoves for Kirsty’s television set. Her living room used to be quite cluttered, but after the installation of these alcoves, she has a ton of new space to put photos of family and friends.

However, I must warn you that they tend to be quite busy with a limited crew, so you may encounter them asking to change certain agreed-upon dates. It shouldn’t be much of a hassle as long as they inform you as early as possible.

Pros

  • High-quality and sturdy shelves
  • Variety in designs
  • Wide range of colours
  • Free estimates

Cons

  • Limited range of products
  • Sudden changes in scheduling

Delighted with the end result

“Ed and his team built a media unit for us and we are delighted with the end result. The whole process was seamless, from the first meeting where he sketched out what we wanted to having it wired for electrics and painted. I would 100% recommend Ed and would use him again.”

– Daragh Carroll, Google Review

Speedy and incredibly high quality

“We had Ed and team build our media unit in our sitting room and it turned out phenomenal. He and his team were professional, informative and helped throughout the decision making process for the design and finish. The work completed was excellent value, speedy and incredibly high quality. We have happily recommended him to a number of friends and family and will be going back to Ed again for another unit this year.”

This one was a suggestion from Joel and Elizabeth, an old couple from across the street. A.D. Woodcraft Custom Carpentry did their new kitchen, and I was quite amused with how beautiful it turned out.

A.D. Woodcraft Custom Carpentry specialises in Fitted Hardwood Wardrobes, Bespoke Fitted Kitchens, and Built-in Alcove Units. I spoke to the couple about their experience, and they said that what they got was a unique design that was truly their own.

Austin also told Elizabeth that they could easily update their radiator covers, which isn’t a service that I tend to hear about. She told me that they had also availed this service, and I was impressed that they were able to turn them into functional shelves as well.

They’re also known to offer services throughout most of Dublin’s city limits. I also learned that they provide commercial services that are specifically for office spaces and that they provide property maintenance along with it.

However, Elizabeth also told me about a certain mismeasurement that bothered her a bit. There was a slight overhang on one of the radiator covers that they made. It wasn’t too noticeable, but she has found that she and Joel have been bumping into it.

Pros

  • Responsive to messages
  • High-quality furnishings
  • Freshly crafted designs
  • Modern aesthetics

Cons

  • Slightly off measurements
  • A bit expensive

Austin and his team of merry men

“Austin and his team of merry men (and one amazing Maid Marian 🙂 transformed our tired old kitchen into a beautiful place to cook and entertain in, that fits in perfectly with our period home. Designing the kitchen with us with patience and thoughtfulness and then putting it all together with admirable skill and craftsmanship. We couldn’t be happier with the result and would recommend them to anyone.”

– Grace, Google Review

He is a craftsman

“Austin and his team did an incredible job on my corner media wall and I would definitely recommend them to anyone considering having this done. The care an attention to detail from the whole team was second to none especially from Karl who is their painter. I wouldn’t consider Karl just a painter, he is a craftsman, and the work he did was outstanding. Many thanks to everyone for all your hard work and I wish you all many more years of work to come

Kind regards Jennifer”

Concept Living Carpentry did fantastic work with my new wardrobe at my house. They fully transformed a small space into a menagerie of accessible shelves and cabinets that could store all my clothes and more.

Jonathan, who was the team leader, also helped in the construction of custom-shaped storage fittings for my office, and they were superb in what they came up with. A lot of small cabinets and sturdy shelves that were a perfect fit for the space.

From a few conversations I had with Jonathan, they also do Alcove Units and even Raised Kids Beds with storage inside. I might ring them up again if I ever need some extra storage, if I have little ones in the house.

They also measure everything beforehand and adjust it to size if something doesn’t fit right. They also built these on-site, which meant no wait time for adjustments. These were also unique in my style, and fit so well with my home’s minimalist aesthetic.

But I would like to give a bit of advice, though: I’d suggest that if you need anything repaired from what they did, you get Jonathan’s number rather than relying on their email, as they sometimes don’t receive the emails that you send them.

Pros

  • Highly customizable furnishings
  • Built on-site
  • Accessible design
  • High-quality goods

Cons

  • Unresponsive via email

Professional, friendly, and efficient

“Jonathan & team were professional, friendly and efficient. They are talented carpenters that take pride in their work. Very easy to deal with. Excellent office & admin team also responding to emails quickly and professionally. We are delighted with our new alcove units.”

– John Byrne, Google Review

We are over the moon with the end product

“I cant recommend Concept Living Carpentry Ltd highly enough. From start to finish they were so easy and a delight to deal with. We were delighted to receive Jonathan’s advice on what style built-in bed and wardrobe would work best for our teenager daughter and her small room. We are over the moon with the end product and our daughter is so happy with her new room. Thanks again lads.”
